Former NBA player Metta World Peace was the keynote speaker for the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles’ 47th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Brotherhood Breakfast. The distinguished basketball figure is not only a great athlete at his sport, but he is also a dynamic, passionate speaker and strong advocate for mental health and animal rights issues. At this event, a couple of profound individuals will be honored with some humanitarian awards for their help and support of community issues. World Peace is also a well-known philanthropist and was the perfect speaker for this kind of event, as it will not only draw in basketball fans from all over the local area, but those who share his interest in making the Los Angeles community a better place.
The Queens, New York native played 14 seasons in the NBA with teams such as the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks. After that, he began playing for the Sichuan Blue Whales in China, but that only lasted a year. Formerly known as Ron Artest, he changed his name to Metta World Peace in 2011. “Changing my name was meant to inspire and bring youth together all around the world,” he said. He has also pursued a music career in addition to being a rapper and NBA star. In 2010 he helped the Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA Championship, and in 2011 he was awarded the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, given to the NBA player, coach, or trainer who shows “outstanding service and dedication to the community.” In 2017, he became the coach of the South Bay Lakers which a specialty in player development.
World Peace was the speaker for this year’s 47th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Brotherhood Breakfast that occurred on January 12th from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and it was a great way to kick off the day with a little community bonding and sharing passions for great causes.
